exp #3 - march 6, 20203/6/2020 On March 6, 2020, Mister Max, Rénny, Eileenie, and I went on a First Friday romp to the VMFA and the ICA. At the VMFA, we saw the photography exhibition about Louis Draper and the Kamoinge Workshop, and, at the ICA, we saw their newest exhibition "The Otolith Group: Xenogenesis" which examines a wealth of issues surrounding Africa and colonialism. We spent around two hours at the two exhibitions in total. I loved the Kamoinge Workshop, which is particularly surprising because I have never been a big fan of photography. There was something about the compositions of these black and white photographs and the insane variety between the different photographers that struck a chord in me. Xenogenesis was similarly as interesting, but I definitely did not enjoy it as much if only because I was tired and did not understand the full complexity of the issues that they were trying to comment on. I think the art made in that exhibition required a certain understanding of colonialism in Ghana to truly make a powerful and long-lasting impact. I, tragically, do not have this prior knowledge; therefore, I was unable to fully appreciate the work and the history presented. My favorite works in the two exhibitions were definitely those that focused on the body. There were a couple photos at the VMFA that stunned me in their sensuality and almost quiet nature that they examined the human form. The compositions were always remarkable in achieving dynamism and a specific, nostalgic ambiance. I have attached images of a couple of the pieces below that were particularly impactful for me. I loved the variety in Xenogenesis and found the collection of stamps from different years in Ghana to be historically significant and to tell a sort of unspoken visual history. I loved the colors and the exhibition of these stamps that were glowing in this completely dark gallery. Questions:
