aware #1 - candice breitz1/7/2020 breitz was born in johannesburg, south africa in 1972 and now resides in berlin where she specializes in moving image installations. she primarily examines the way individuals become "themselves," and how their community* and experiences impact that development. breitz's most recent work focuses on empathy and how fictional characters and celebrities are able to draw empathy in an odd parallel to real tragedies.
breitz received her degrees from the university of the witwatersrand (johannesburg) (b.a. in fine arts), uchicago (m.a. in art history), and columbia (doctoral candidate in art history, m.phil. art history). she has been a tenured professor at hochschule fur bildende kunste in braunschweig since 2007. in terms of residencies and stipends, she has worked with the o.k center for contemporary art upper austria in linz (2001), the artpace international artist-in-residence program in san antonio (2002), the kunstlerhaus bethanien international artists in residency program in berlin (2002), the iaspis internatioanl artists' studio program in stockholm (2003), the cité internationale des arts in paris (2005), the baltic centre for contemporary art in gateshead (2006), the quartier 21 artist-in-residency programme in vienna (2012), and the nomadic residents/ocad university in toronto (2013). she has won the prix international d'art contemporain from the fondation prince pierre de monaco (2007), the b3 ben award - b3 biennial of the moving image - frankfurt am main (2013), and the kunstpreis der spd fraktion des niedersachsischen landtages (2014). she has exhibited in over 30 museums and galleries including notable institutions like the tate modern, the moma, the guggenheim, the sfmoma, the mca in chicago, the musée d'art moderne grand-duc jean, the smithsonian national museum of african art, the mfa in boston, and the national gallery of victoria. these institutions commonly exhibited her work in a solo exhibition or collected some of the pieces. highlights of breitz's career include representing south africa at the 57th venice biennale in both 2005 and 2017 and exhibiting her work at the sundance film festival and toronto international film festival. her website opens with her most recent work ("love story") and an artist statement about the piece. she has also linked more information about this work on the side with interviews, essays, press, and installation views. she created a section dedicated to just her with a biography, cv, current exhibitions list, and other works as well as her vimeo account which features all of her pieces. *she refers to family, national belonging, race, gender, religion, and mainstream media (tv, cinema, pop culture). i was primarily drawn to breitz's work due to my recent fascination with video art and new media. she also specializes in mass media and the explosion of technology and how that has changed how we, as humans, interact and understand each other and ourselves. although her content is less female focused, i believe her broadness allows plenty of room for exploration and growth. her work is distinctly conceptual and thought-provoking but also simple in its power. the composition of the shots of her most recent work are all central and each sports a green background with no added decoration. i want to be able to create multi-faceted work like breitz and embrace a broader content that allows me to push my chosen mediums and artistic expression to its limits. author.jacqueline. she/her. senior. virginia, usa. art v. archives.
