Progress Post #21 - February 23, 20182/23/2018 We started on our still lifes this week! I finally found items that I genuinely like. I think my charcoal outline of my still lifes and composition are a little funky but I think it will get better overtime. I began adding my shadows, but it might take a while especially since I have a lot of small details. My home project is coming along nicely, and I came up with a landscape that I think will look nice although time will tell. I plan on making it a tad abstract by juxtaposing elements from the city onto a scene from the suburbs. Our sketchbooks were due this Thursday, so I had to grind to get mine done. I am pretty satisfied with the result, but my grade will be the final decider.

Progress Post #20 - February 16, 20182/16/2018 Happy Valentine's Day! This week, I attended an amazing Lunchtime Lecture with Hamilton Glass where I learned a lot about murals, and I hope to try creating one one day. I finally finished blending all the colors for oil paints for our color swatching assignment. We started on our still life compositions, and I went with some weird still life objects that I don't really like, so I might change them later. Today, we learned about Duane Keiser and Wayne Thiebaud as spotlight artists. I love Thiebaud's work, and I humbly apologize for pronouncing his name wrong all these years. We continued to prep our canvases which was exciting, and I loved sanding down the canvas so it was super smooth.
Progress Post #19 - February 9, 20182/9/2018 This week we took pictures of our big paintings, learned how to hang them, and critiqued them! I really enjoyed hearing other people's opinions on my work and am committed to using better colors. We are working on oil painting next which I am excited about since I have always wanted to experiment with oils. We learned about stretching and making our own canvases which was super cool since I've always wanted to make some funky shaped canvases. I began looking into still life objects to bring in, but I am still unsure.
Progress Post #18 - February 1, 20182/4/2018 More and more layers! This week, all I did was add more surface and more paint to my canvas. At one point, my goal for a figure ground relationship became lost and chaos reigned. I also became interested in adding writing to my work. I scratched some letters in and added some graphite around the canvas which I think really adds a layer of depth. The ability to see through the scratches to the color underneath is very aesthetically pleasing to me. Furthermore, I added some gross brown color which I need to cover. I don't think the piece is resolved despite me signing it, and I really want to add some light colored pastels to the very dark areas around the piece. Good news is that I was able to get rid of the faintly France-like shape of my past. I also added a bunch of charcoal in order to create some semblance of a figure. author.jacqueline. she/her. senior. virginia, usa. art v. archives.
