Experience #1 - November 2, 201911/2/2019 On November 1, 2019, I attended the annual First Friday Art Walk hosted by the art department. I went with my friends, and we dressed up as famous artists for Halloween (I was Yoko Ono). We visited numerous galleries and museums including the ICA, 1708, Quirk, Ada, Gallery 5, and one that we dubbed the Disco Ball gallery because, the last time we visited, it had a disco ball. I had a great time seeing all of these new and captivating art works and being surrounded by other art enthusiasts who were equally as enthralled by the pieces hanging on the walls. I especially enjoyed the ICA exhibitions that starred numerous artists with works based on a central theme. I thought it was very interesting to see how all of these different individuals could interpret the same kinds of issues. In "Great Force", race and its nuances are dissected by more than 20 artists in powerful and unique mediums. There were sculptures, videos, paintings, and mixed media works that all conveyed a fascinating narrative and opinion. I especially enjoyed the works by Mores McWreath which I thought presented issues of "whiteness" and the antiracism racism of white people in a comedic yet comprehensive and thought provoking manner. The videos' installation was also excellently done in the way it resembled skin and veins. I have a couple questions and observations regarding the work I saw and how it can relate to my own. How does one most effectively include social commentary into their work in an understandable yet simultaneously open to interpretation manner? How does installation impact the message of a work? In this new age of video, how has performance art and installations of it changed? I want to use the ideas I saw at the ICA and in the numerous galleries to inform my own use of materials. There were so many diverse mediums used in "Great Force," but they were all very effective and pertinent to the content of each work and I want to achieve a level of sophistication in my art where the material adds another layer of meaning to my work. Furthermore, I want to use video and performance more because there is such diversity in displaying works using this medium that lends itself to a more powerful and interactive experience for the viewer. author.jacqueline. she/her. senior. virginia, usa. art v. archives.
