exp #2 - november 24, 201912/20/2019 on november 24, 2019, mister max n i went to go see the hopper exhibition at the vmfa. it was pretty cool! i liked the recreation and interactiveness of the hotel room and the lobby which added a layer of interest to this typical exhibition. there was a distinct quietness (it was like something in the room quelled those who visited) about this show that i think fit the theme of the works very well. we spent around two hours in the exhibition. i had walked-through prior with the class i volunteer at, but it was nice to see the works again and focus more on some of the pieces i glossed over previously. my favorite piece was definitely haunted house (1926). it is one of hopper's beautiful watercolors and the use of light, colors, and general energy of this painting was unmatched by even some of the canvas oil paintings. it is simplistic and vaguely unsettling, as any good painting of a haunted house should be. hopper utilizes some arbitrary colors in the shadows of house, especially a beautiful, vibrant dark blue that contrasts wonderfully with the warm toned brown he used in the roof. i also like how he handled the foliage at the base of the house as the pink, blue, green, and yellow erratic strokes promote intrigue and add a non stereotypical element to this landscape. in terms of the exhibition as a whole, i liked how it contrasted contemporary pieces with hopper and noted similarities and influences. exploring how artists interpret the same theme is particularly fascinating to me. questions
